Staying Fit in Fayette & Coweta

Area residents know that there’s no end to the ways they can stay fit and have fun. Whatever activities you enjoy, you’ll find them here. State-of-the-art facilities and sports leagues for all ages abound, as well as public access parks, so everyone can get involved and active.

Check out the Recreation Departments of Fayette County, Coweta County and Peachtree City. They have long lists of team sport choices including baseball, tee ball, softball, basketball, soccer, football, cheerleading and volleyball, as well as programs for activities such as dancing, table tennis, tree climbing and golf. There are many sports parks here, most notably McCurry Park in Fayetteville, the Baseball & Soccer Complex in Peachtree City and the Hunter Complex in Coweta County.

Fayette Family YMCA is set on 29 acres that feature hiking trails, lake frontage for canoeing, sand volleyball courts, sports fields, and outdoor pools. In Coweta County, Summit Family YMCA has swimming and tennis, a full range of team sports, wellness clubs and other fitness classes including tennis and martial arts.

World Gym—Fayette offers activities that appeal to everyone. In addition to the traditional programs, they offer swimming, dancing and handball. Both Piedmont Newnan Hospital and Piedmont Fayette Hospital have fitness centers for exercise and rehabilitation.

For athletes interested in soccer, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee and other sports, there are the nearby Georgia Soccer Park in East Point and Score Indoor Sports in Fairburn. Prefer basketball? The Bridge in Peachtree City is one of many spots that have regular games, as well as fitness programs—and more.

Autrey’s Armory in Fayetteville is a local gun shop and range for folks who want to improve their shooting skills. They offer shooting and safety classes.

The Peachtree City BMX, located on McIntosh Trail near the Frederick Brown Jr Amphitheater, hosts more than 25 bicycle sprint races a year. Area bike shops also organize regular rides.

The Coweta and Fayette area has tons of golf courses. There are private clubs like White Oak and Whitewater Creek, and daily fee courses, such as Rivers Edge and Arbor Springs. Driving ranges and teaching centers are also found locally. And there are venues for Frisbee golf as well.

If tennis is your game, you’re in the right place. The Peachtree City Tennis Center is a premier 24-court facility that’s open 7 days a week and hosts tournaments, leagues and lessons.

Operation Bootcamp, specially designed for people who want are committed to getting and staying fit, has groups that meet in Peachtree City and Newnan. Swimmers come from miles around to the 25-yard competitive swimming pool at Kedron Fieldhouse in Peachtree City; the facility also houses a heated instructional pool, inline skating rink and courts used for basketball and volleyball.

One of the Peachtree City Running Club’s biggest events, the annual Peachtree City Classic Road Race takes place in October. The club hosts races throughout the year for children and adults. In early autumn, the Peachtree City Triathlon draws athletes throughout Georgia and across the US to compete in a .3-mile swim, 12.6-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run.

There are lots of choices for martial arts and dance instruction, and the area’s lakes give people an opportunity to enjoy kayaking and fishing. At the end of summer, the Peachtree City Rotary Clubs hosts the Dragon Boat Races on Lake Peachtree. The event challenges rowers as they learn to work together to win furiously fast heats.

The area’s cart path system, most notably in Peachtree City, offers a perfect place for walking, running, inline skating or bicycling. You can hike, ride or run on your own or get involved in local groups and classes.

Everyone in the family can get active and have fun, from kids to grandparents. All through Coweta and Fayette, there are programs and centers that appeal to every age and every interest.
