Both counties boast first-rate education.

One of the main reasons families decide to locate in Fayette and Coweta counties because of the excellent school systems. Both counties boast first-rate public schools with outstanding academic programs, athletic departments, and facilities. Furthermore, there are numerous private schools throughout both counties.

The Fayette County School System consists of five high schools, an adult community school, five middle schools, and fourteen elementary schools. The county has over 20,000 registered students. The Fayette LIFE Academy, home to three unconventional schools: Fayette Virtual Academy, Horizon Academy, and Open Campus Academy, is also part of the education system. The school system’s Center of Innovation (COI) campus provides career and technical education (CTE) courses to prepare students for college and professional success.

The virtual academy enables students to complete classes, assignments, and projects from home, whilst the on-site academy supports one-on-one work and test taking.

The Horizon Academy invites students who benefit from both non-traditional and organized learning experiences. In a mixed learning environment, students can take charge of their education and learn at their own pace.

The CTE center (Career and Technical Education) provides work-based learning, dual enrollment, and technical education. Dual enrollment allows high school students to avoid repeating college courses by enrolling in them while still in high school and obtaining credit. Students who finish dual enrollment can enroll in college after high school, and some may be categorized as sophomores.

Fayette county high schools continue to achieve high marks in both test scores and graduation rates. While Georgia’s graduation rate increased to 85.4% (an all-time high), Fayette County’s graduation rate jumped from 92% in 2023 to 94.7% in 2024.

The average SAT score in Fayette County was 1116, which was 121 points higher than the national average and 86 points higher than the state average. ACT scores continue to impress as well, with a composite average of 22.8. The state average is 21.2 and the national average is 19.4. McIntosh students average score was the 13th best in the state.

Coweta County schools serve over 22,500 students in it’s three high schools, eight middle schools and eight primary schools. It also includes the eighth grade Charter College & Career Academy, the Central Educational Center, Winston Dowdell Academy, Burwell Academy, and Empower Virtual Program.  An additional gem in the crown is the system-owned Donald W. Nixon Centre for the Performing and Visual Arts, which gives Coweta County students of all ages access to the Fine Arts.

A testament to consistency, 2024 was the tenth year in a row that students in Coweta County high schools outperformed both national averages and state averages. On the SAT, Coweta County’s average score was 1062, 30 points higher than the Georgia average and 67 points above the national average.

Coweta County ACT scores were also above state and national averages. The county’s composite average score was 21.4, compared to 21.2 Georgia average and 19.4 national average.

Graduation rates: The proportion of Coweta County School System high school students who graduated on time increased to 91.9% for the class of 2024.

This year’s rate of 91.9 percent is slightly higher than the Coweta County School System’s previous high of 91.7 percent last year and the high of 91.6 percent reported in 2020.  Coweta County’s total graduation rate was more than 6% higher than the state of Georgia’s 2024 rate, which rose by one percentage point to 85.4%, Georgia’s highest rate ever.

According to Coweta County, their high schools have also used a number of strategies and supports to increase graduation rates throughout that time, including:

• Relevant and challenging instruction by high-quality teachers.

• Individual graduation plans for each student which are closely monitored by faculty.

• Online credit recovery opportunities for students who encounter difficulty in classes, and content-based support and Saturday school opportunities.

• Tutoring available during the day and before and after school.

• Students-support services outside of the classroom including counseling and staff advisors, online facilitator, ELEVATE Coweta Students, and community mentors.

• ELEVATE Coweta Students partnerships working with the most at-risk students.

• Screening for students in math and ELA starting as they transition from 8th to 9th grade and continuing each grading period throughout a student’s time in high school.

• Emphasis on 9th grade readiness and careful scheduling of students

• Innovative scheduling opportunities, including literacy and math focus as well as accelerated and advanced learning opportunities through the Central Educational Center, dual-enrollment opportunities and work-based learning.

• Organizing professional learning communities for teachers and monitoring the impact of those opportunities by department and content area.

• Content nights for parents to encourage family awareness and support for student’s graduation requirements, high school scheduling and academic content.

• Focusing short-term federal funds made available to Coweta County in recent years into additional teaching personnel, tutoring and other initiatives that have addressed learning loss and increased student support.

In addition to traditional learning environments, the Coweta County School System offers students personalized study plans, non-traditional educational settings, and a variety of enrichment activities on and off school grounds. The Coweta County School System partners with community organizations, small businesses, the Coweta County Development Authority, universities, and West Georgia Technical College to offer programs such as virtual learning, online courses, work-based learning, and dual enrollment. These programs help to ensure that graduates are prepared to enter the twenty-first century workforce or pursue postsecondary education.

Coweta and Fayette counties have a number of private schools that cater to children with a variety of needs, academic strengths, and extracurricular interests. Churches and other establishments also provide childcare and preschool services to county residents.
